In 1994 Richard, along with sculptors Ortho and Jared Fairbanks, created a monument in Salt Lake City based on the angel statue in Richard’s first book The Christmas Box. This statue, called the Christmas Box Angel monument, stands as a place for parents who have lost children to grieve and heal. On December 6th of each year a candlelight healing ceremony is held at the base of the Christmas Box Angel monument. After a few remarks, a moment of silence, and the lullaby of a children’s choir, the attendees are invited to leave a white flower at the base of the angel statue.
Since that first Angel Ceremony in December of 1994 more than 100 angel statues have been erected around the U.S., and in many cities a ceremony is held December 6th. If you would like to find out if there is an Angel Statue and ceremony in your area please click on Angel Statues from the left-hand side of the page.
As usual, Salt Lake City’s annual Christmas Box Angel statue ceremony will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery on Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 pm. For more information about the Christmas Box Angel Statue and the December 6th ceremony please click on Angel Statues on the left-hand side of the page. You will also find a map to help you find the monument within the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Remember to dress warm!

My assistant’s grandson, Nathan Glad, was born with Osteogenesis imperfecta–also known as Brittle Bone disease–a rare, genetic bone disorder. He was not expected to live and Diane and her husband spent several days before his birth making funeral arrangements.
Although Nathan survived pregnancy, X-rays showed that he had twenty-six broken bones. “His bones are about the consistency of a pretzel,” he grandfather said. He is now six-years-old. Since his birth he has had dozens of operations and more than a hundred broken bones.
“Nathan is always filled with gratitude,” his father said.
Are we? Probably not enough for our own good. Far too often, we focus on what we don’t have instead of giving thanks for what we do. While ingratitude is, as Immanuel Kant said, “the essence of vileness”, it is also remarkably self-defeating. Oprah said it well,
“What you focus on expands, and when you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it. Opportunities, relationships, even money flowed my way when I learned to be grateful no matter what happened in my life.”
If you are unhappy, you are very likely filled with ingratitude. That’s because it is psychologically impossible to be simultaneously filled with gratitude and bitterness. If you are waiting for something good to happen to give thanks–it likely never will. And if your ship does come in–you most likely won’t be grateful. That’s because gratitude is more proactive than reactive. If you are not skilled at cultivating gratitude for the very necessities of life you receive, food, air and water, why would you be better at it when you receive something of far less importance?
Gratitude, like love, is a choice. The Pilgrims suffered terrible losses of life and endured tremendous poverty and hardships, yet still they set aside a day for Thanksgiving. On this designated day of thanks, let us be wise as they are and remember that gratitude is more than a sign of civility and dignity, it is a source of great power in our lives.
As psychologists turn more attention to Positive Psychology, they have discovered the very-real power of gratitude. It has been found that those who actively cultivate and ritualize gratitude in their lives:
Have an increased sense of well-being and happiness.
Have better relationships and more friends
Increase their prosperity
Have better health
In addition, grateful thinking—and especially expression of it to others—is associated with increased levels of energy, optimism, and empathy.
Can we be like the pilgrims? Can we be like Nathan? Of course we can. We just need to make a choice and a plan. Ask yourself upon waking what you are grateful for. Keep a gratitude journal. Buy a stack of thank you notes and express gratitude every day. (You will be amazed at the effect it has on others.) Search for reasons to thank others. Instead of wallowing through mires of stagnant thought, worries and willful victimhood, train your thoughts on the many blessings you are grateful for. As you do so you’ll invite more such blessings into your life as well as become a blessing to others.
On this wonderful day I thank you, my dear readers and friends, for letting me be a part of your lives and making it possible for me to write my books. Thank you for sharing my books and messages with others. Thank you for the kind things you write me and the kindness you show me at book signings and events. I am truly grateful for you and wish for you today, and each day, joy, a thankful heart and many blessings.
With much gratitude,
Richard Paul Evans

Kirkus Reviews recently reviewed Richard’s fall book A Winter Dream:
“Best-selling author Evans takes the biblical story of Joseph and transposes it to contemporary times in Denver, Chicago and New York. This novel turns biblical archetypes into authentic, believable characters and uses an interesting and credible plot to convey an important message. Joseph Jacobson, or J.J as he likes to be called, is his father’s 12th son, one of two sons born of his father’s fourth wife. His 11 brothers are jealous of him because he is also his father’s favorite. The biblical coat of many colors is, in this modern tale, the father’s Navy flight jacket from Vietnam decorated with the colorful patches of his deployment. Joseph’s father chose to give him this precious gift at a family dinner on the same night he celebrated his favorite son’s success in saving an account for the family advertising firm. And so the story begins. The oldest brothers find a way to banish their hated younger brother to a different company in Chicago, where he rises above hardships only to fall and rise again. Each chapter begins with one of the narrator’s dreams, and these dreams turn out to be symbolically prophetic, just as Joseph’s dreams in Egypt turned out to be. The first-person narrative voice feels familiar and endearing, and the conversations among the various characters are authentic. Readers will relate to these characters, be moved to tears and laughter by them, and most importantly, be inspired by them.

Overview of book:
Joseph Jacobson is the twelfth of thirteen siblings, all of whom are employed by their father’s successful Colorado advertising company. But underneath the success runs a poisonous undercurrent of jealousy; Joseph is his father’s favorite and the focus of his brothers’ envy and hatred. When the father seems ready to anoint Joseph as his heir, the brothers make their move, forcing Joseph from the company and his Denver home, severing his ties to his parents and ending his relationship with his soon-to-be fianceé. Alone and lonely, Joseph must start a new lif
Joseph joins a Chicago advertising agency where his creativity helps him advance high up in the company. He also finds hope for a lasting love with April, a kind woman with a secret. However, all secrets hold consequences, and when Joseph learns the truth about April’s past, his world is again turned upside down. Finally, Joseph must confront his own difficult past in order to make his dreams for the future come true.
A Winter Dream is an ingenious modern retelling of the Old Testament story of Joseph and the coat of many colors by the master of the holiday novel.

The following announcement was published by Richard on his Facebook Fan Page:
“My name is Michael Vey and there’s something you don’t know about me; something that scares people more than you would believe. It’s my secret—and it’s part of the story I’m about to tell you.”
A year ago, while I was working on my fall novel (Promise Me), something unexpected happened. A different book started coming to me with such force I had to stop what I was working on and write it. Frankly, I haven’t had that much raw inspiration since my first book, The Christmas Box (which now has more than 8 million copies in print). The book that came to me was a young adult thriller about a young man with Tourette’s syndrome named Michael Vey. I think Michael Vey is the most exciting character I’ve ever created.
Michael Vey; The Prisoner of Cell 25 will be released this August 9th and is the first book in a series of 7 books. It’s interesting that this book came to me at this time, when the YA (Young Adult) genre is being flooded with the very opposite kind of book–stories with dark and dystopian themes. Michael Vey is an adventure story about hope, loyalty, courage and love. Yes, it’s also scary at times, but that just makes it fun!
Can a book with positive messages and role models succeed with youth today?
After writing Michael Vey I made up several hundred advanced copies and loaned them out to Middle Schools, Teachers and adult readers. What we found was astonishing.
With more than 200 middle school readers:
Here are some of the responses we’ve received so far for Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25. (You’ll recognize some of these names.)
“My kind of book– fast, funny, and strange. Once Michael’s astounding powers are revealed, the shocks keep coming chapter after chapter.”
– R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps (400 million copies in print)
“Michael Vey is one of the most original thrillers I’ve come across in years. It’s rare that a book can appeal to a young adult just as much as their parents–but Evans has pulled it off.”
– Vince Flynn, #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author
“Michael Vey is the most exciting book I’ve read in the last two years. I couldn’t put it down. The character message is spot on. I believe Michael Vey is going to be a blockbuster.”
– Glenn Beck, #1 bestselling author, media personality
“Michael Vey is a high energy read!”
– Brandon Mull, #1 bestselling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series
“Our students went nuts over [Michael Vey]. I’m not exaggerating to say that Michael Vey is the most popular reading we’ve ever assigned…”
– Bill Glysson, Middle school Principal, Dayton, Ohio
“I used Michael Vey in my classroom with remarkable success. I actually had students coming to school early every day to read the book… My students not only begged me to read it, one actually bribed me with his lunch money to let him take it home! I had students improving their grades from F’s to A’s and B’s… in all my years of teaching I’ve never seen a phenomenon like this. Finally a book BOYS WILL READ!”
– Pat Daskalis, Middle school English Teacher, Churchill Jr. High school, Salt Lake City, Utah
“The message of Michael Vey is one every parent, every teacher, every administrator will want their children to read–yet it doesn’t come out as preaching at all.”
– Ann Harkins, CEO national Crime Prevention Council and McGruff House
“As a person with Tourette’s Syndrome, I am so incredibly grateful for Michael Vey, a hero with this disability. I predict that Michael Vey will improve the confidence of hundreds of thousands of youths suffering from disorders. Michael Vey’s message of character value over popularity is much needed.”
– Kara Larsen, Chapter President, Utah Tourette’s Syndrome Association
Here’s what the kids are saying…(These are actual notes from students.)
Dear Mr. Evans . . .
I really don’t like to read books but I love to read this one! This is the best book I’ve ever read. Thank you. You’ve inspired me to read more. . .
Cooper S.
This is a great book. I am addicted to reading it and it is hard to put down…
Gus G.
This book is the most interesting I have ever read…I’m absolutely in love with this book…one of the most intense and pumping books ever, I hope you make a huge series cause I can assure you I will buy every book. If you can sell the movie right for it, it would be the most intense epic movie ever. . .
Nic B.
So there’s my big announcement! We picked up a very big movie agent who, after reading the book, is very excited about this series. I hope you’re as excited about it as we are! MICHAEL VEY: The Prisoner of Cell 25 will be released this August 9th. I will be sending you fun facts and tidbits over the next couple months. We also have a curriculum for schools and homeschoolers. It is my hope to make MICHAEL VEY one of the biggest books in the world. If you would like to help us take it to that level I’m looking for a few people in every state to help represent Michael Vey. If you’re interested in helping, Email me at author@richardpaulevans.com. I can’t wait for you to read this book!
Thanks!
Richard

If you would like to find out if there is an Angel Statue and ceremony in your area please click on Angel Statues from the homepage.
As usual, Salt Lake City’s annual Christmas Box Angel statue ceremony will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery on Monday, December 6th at 7:00 pm. For more information about the Christmas Box Angel Statue and the December 6th ceremony please click on Angel Statues from the home page. You will also find a map to help you find the monument within the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Remember to dress warm!

Glen Beck recently endorsed Richard’s newest book Promise Me on his Facebook fan page. His comment was as follows:
“A couple of weeks ago I linked you to the trailer for my good friend Richard Paul Evans’ new book called “Promise Me.” Tens of thousands of you watched it, so I wanted to let you know that the book itself was just released. Richard has posted the first two chapters for free so you can see if you like it first…but, believe me, you will. The man doesn’t have 14 New York Times bestsellers for nothing. (Amazon.com has it for just $10 right now).”
